Courtyard House I

Project Description

This project preserves the single-story character of the neighborhood, avoiding overbuilding. Street-facing facades remain mostly unchanged, with a vaulted roof uniting the courtyard, master bedroom, and living areas.

The scheme expands a 1900 SF, 1940s bungalow to a two-story, 3000 SF home that completes an almost-courtyard footprint. An origami-like approach to geometry, lofting of the first story to the second story from the existing first story gable profile, and careful positioning of windows and doors on each floor, create a serene environment marked by deep axial and diagonal views across the home and through interior and exterior spaces. The newly completed courtyard becomes an open-air room, acting as an aerator and visual connector of primary living spaces across four edges.
