This 3-story, rural hillside house is southwardly oriented to the magnificent Malibu mountain viewshed just east of the Pacific Ocean. To set up views from all habitable spaces, all services, and vertical circulation are housed in an inhabited bar along its north edge; and an edge-defining 2-story lightwell animates the heart of the dwelling.
The organization of the stoic, rectangular extrusion is gently underlined by horizontal metal cladding on 3 sides, with the view-facing elevation rendered as a planar, subtly indented and quasi-curved surface that creates shade and shadows. The overall mass is precisely chiseled, here and there, to both attenuate bulk and create tangential and peripheral corner views.
